7:02 am
be drawing lines in the sand on that looming fiscal cliff. big tax hikes and spending cuts that could take effect at the end of the year if they can't find a compromise. also, it sounds crazy, but apparently it's real. you'll meet some people who are addicted to the internet. and with prices skyrocketing at the super market, we have tips on stretching your dollar and making your groceries last longer. and speaking of money, famous women making it fashionable to recycle outfits. i wore this suit six weeks ago, okay? >> and a poodle mix that was rescued from a trash heat and who is blind. i watched this piece earlier
7:03 am
today, it brings tears to your eyes. we begin this morning with the scandal that cost cia director david petraeus his job. >> good morning to you erica, this stunning news comes on the heels of the president's triumphant reelection. he lead combat forces in iraq and afghanistan and was considered one of the top leaders of his generation. sources say his reputation was sterling. he was known for putting country first, that all changed this week when he offered his resignation. he says after being married for 37 years, i showed extremely poor judgment by engaging in an extramarital affair. it is unacceptable as a husband and a leader of an organization such as ours.
7:04 am
nbc news as confirmed that the fbi opened an investigation if broadwell had improper access to he e-mails or other computer access. michael morell was appointed to take over, and he released this statement thanking petraeus for his service. >> he has made our country safer and stronger. going forward, my thoughts and prayers are with dave and holly petraeus. now this comes as the cia and the obama administration face intense scrutiny about that b benghazi attack. >> what can you tell us about mike morell? will he now testify? this week is the hearing on the benghazi attack, correct? >> that's what's expected. she very well known not only to the president, but to the cia. he is a career agency officer.
7:05 am
he joined back in 1980 when he was just 21 years old as an economic analyst. he is one of the top people who was briefing president obama during the planning process to take down osama bin laden, so president obama has a tremendous amount of confidence in michael morell. >> and in terms of members of congress in the intelligence community, an interesting reaction. it it come as a complete shock? >> a complete shock. i was working the phones all day long talking to my sources at the white house and capitol hill, and they say they never would have expected this from david petraeus. his reputation was really sterli sterling. you had senator dianne feinstein come out and say i respect his decision, but i rish he had not accepted his resignation.
7:06 am
i spoke to a number of members of the intelligence community that said this is the right thing to do. mark halprin, this all came as a shock, but there's still a lot of kwetss about the timing here in terms of when he went to see the president. is there anything there? >> the timing for a lot of people is curious sandwiched between the election and next week's testimony on benghazi. still a lot of questions for both parties. and the cia's roll there before, during, and after the tragic event. i suspect people will still want to hear from him and question why he is no longer testifying. probably, based on everything we know, this is a personal failure as he said, but people are going to raise questions until more facts are known, particularly
7:07 am
about what were the or ggins. people are still questions benghazi and if there was blackmail. there's no evidence that his hand was forced, but that's what people are wondering now. >> people want to know what exactly the fbi was looking into. >> they were concerned someone else was accessing his e-mail, own that's a concern. >> yes, here is a guy, a long record of public service, serving the country, and considered a man of uninpeachble honorability. we will learn more, no doubt. >> what is the impact you see on the military community and the intelligence community. >> a lot of people are shocked.
7:08 am
if you're not part of the washington community and the people on capitol hill, you don't recognize -- you can't know how big of a shack this is to people. the president has to remake his national security team. i don't think he was planning on replacing the cia director, he will have to replace hillary clinton, leon panetta, maybe his attorney general. the president demands two things, diversity and excellence. and now, replacing his cia director will be part of that mix. some people in the pentagon, in the intelligence committee resented him a bit. he was a super star, he performed at a very high level. one of the most excellent people in his profession. they need to find somebody to replace him that's equally as
7:09 am
excellent. >> is there a political fallout for the president or any others? washington? >> i think it could relate to benghazi. one of the things that goes on, when there is a national security scandal or crisis, is there is tensions between people in the intelligence world, political people at the white house, and the suspicion for a lot of people is that things were being covered up, not fully discussed. no doubt the cia is at the center of that. two of the people that tragically died were part of the cia, so there could be some controversial and from a point of view, why did we get it back as late as we did, his resignation, as shocking as it is, teases some of those questions of what will happen at the testimony next week, what were the facts leading up to the tragedy and in the aftermath. >> we'll be watching closely, that's for sure.
7:10 am
>> thanks, now today looming fiscal cliff, drastic spending cuts and tax hikes to kick in at the end of the year if congress does not reach a deal. a showdown is looming between the president and congress. good morning. >> good morning, lester, both sides say they want compromise, but there is not much common ground on one big issue, how much should the wealthy pay in taxes. >> president obama issued a warning ahead of the coming fiscal fight with republicans. >> i refuse to accept any approach that isn't balanced. on tuesday night, we found out that the majority of americans agree with my approach. >> that approach means making the wealthy pay more in taxes, a vow the president made repeatedly in the campaign, but john boehner, appearing earlier in the day, says it won't happen on his watch.
7:11 am
>> raising tax rates will slow down our ability to create the jobs that everyone says they want. >> it is the key sticking point, and if it can't be resolved by the end of the year, the nation heads over the fiscal cliff. a combination of expires tax cuts costing the average household almost $3500 in higher taxes next year. combined, analysts say it would mean slower economic growth and a soaring jobless rate next year. >> i'm not wedded to every detail of my plan. i'm open to compromise. i'm open to new ideas. >> both sides hint if there is to be a deal, it could ultimately include chances to the tax code and an overhaul of entitlement programs. >> it's not like there is money in social security or medicare, this has to be dealt with.
7:12 am
everything on the revenue and spending side has to be looked at. >> there you have it, both sides have drawn their lines in the sand publicly. the first steps may come next week when the president hosts leaders here at the white house. bob, thank you. senator corker, welcome. >> good morning. >> i want to get your thoughts on the resignation of cia director petraeus, do you agree with the president that it was the right thing to accept the resignation. >> i don't know all of the details, he is something that everybody respected, and certainly my thoughts are with him and his wife, and i think more details will come out as time goes on. he is certainly someone here in congress that when he spoke, people listened and he will be missed sorely. >> let's talk about the financial situation the nation is in right now. the president and speaker boehner were staking out
7:13 am
positions yesterday, but at the same time not being nailed down on specifics. do you think that both are really in a mood to compromise? that we'll see a true meeting of the minds here? >> i hope so, if we're going to get a result by year end, the only way we will do it is if the two of them are in agreement. that's the only way for it to occur. i see a lot of common ground. i think people on the right and the left agree that the upper income can pay more, it's just whether you get it through rates or closing loopholes and reductions. republicans have long been willing to let loopholes and deductions will closed for upper income people like myself to generate income. and that's a progrowth way to generate revenues. >> at the end of the day, if there is more money coming out of your paycheck, what does it matter what you call it? >> well, here is the deal, most
7:14 am
small businesses and most businesses in general file their income taxes through llcs, they're paying at a personal level. so if you do it the way i outlined, you generate a progrowth system for individuals, but the loopholes are closed. it's a progrowth way growth for the economy. it's a way of generating economic growth, and at the same time, generating those revenues for weather persons. i don't think the issue is about revenues. i think speaker boehner laid out 800 billion in revenues the last time they met. the real issue here in my opinion, and i meet republicans and democrats all the time, is how deeply we'll deal with the issue of entitlements and especially the medicare program. to me, that's the key to the discussions, and that is, will the president will willing to really fundamentally change the
7:15 am
medicare program. i think he if he is willing to do that, you will see a compromise here. >> i want to just talk briefly about this notion of a two-step measure that speaker boehner ports, a stopgap that will buy a little time to january. can we afford that or can we do this all in one step? >> i'm not a fan of that, look. we all know what the issues are. we've been talking about this for two years. we had two dry runs at it now. i'm not a fan of a two-step process. let's rip the band-aid off and deal with this. i don't like that approach, and my hope is that people would just sit down, we know what the issues are, let's put forth a solution and get this behind us. there will be other events down the road where we he will have to take even deeper steps.
7:16 am
this is an issue that will take awhile for us to resolve. i don't like the notion of a small down payment and kicking the can down the road. i think it's time for us to act. i don't know how the atmosphere could be any better. there's more commonality here than people could possibly imagine here on this issue, there is, let's just do it in and out. >> i think a lot of folks want to see you work together and work this out. thank you for coming on this morning senator bob corker. >> rip off that band-aid, huh? we want to check in with jenna wolfe now. >> four days now since the election and no word on the results in florida. all states must report their election results today to finally decide who won the presidential race. and three days after washington has a new governor, jay inslee
